GSP vs Matt Hughes Video December 3, 2006

This was a great fight that I just can’t watch enough.
For those of you who don’t know UFC, here’s the background:
- Matt Hughes was the reigning welterweight champ going into the fight. He’s also an arrogant asshole and a hardcore Christian. Despite that, he’s a legend.
- Georges St. Pierre is a loveable and shy Canadian who has idolized Hughes his whole career. Did I mention that he’s loveable?

Now, I’m sure there are people out there who will claim the two nut-kicks (NK) are the reason GSP won, but after watching this fight over and over, and after watching several Hughes fights, here what I have to say:
- GSP is already dominating before the NK’s occur.
- Hughes looks a lot like a faker from the fights I’ve watched of him. It’s NK this, thumb in the eye that with him.
- If GSP’s toes even did thwack Hughes’ mannyparts, it was hardly at all, and certainly got played up by Hughes far past it’s significance.

Why the F**K did hughes try to stand with st.pierre and only attempt 2 take downs! Is the guy out of his mind. He’s a F**king wrestler I bet half the guys in the ufc could out strike Hughes. He has never won a fight standing and then stands with the best striker in the weilterweights. St. pierre is so great ya……….Hughes is f**king stupid for dumping his wresling stradegy. St. pierre is a great athlete and incredibly well rounded but to say hughes did everything he could to take down st.pierre is dellusional, hughes obviously though he was good enough to strike with st.pierre and learned the hard way he couldn’t. So there those are my thoughts.
I’m kinda lost on that too. He says his dream is to knock someone out, but a fight against the top contender he’s faced in a long time doesn’t seem to be a good time to give it a try.
It’s tough to go to the ground when the guy keeps kicking your legs, as GSP did, but his legs would have to be hurting awfully bad for him to think standing was a better option.
The only good explanation is that GSP was far too in control of the fight. They keep pretty far from each other for most of it, and his leg kicks were too fast to catch (I guess) and too often to feel safe lowering your head to shoot.
I still don’t think that’s a good enough explanation, so I’ll throw in the standard “Matt Hughes hubris” comment. He was fighting a guy he’d beaten already, after all…
When i read the CBC article re: canadian athlete of the year, I was impressed to see someone mention GSP. Now that same person has commented on your blog. wow. you’re blog is rightup there with cbcin my book.
So I was reading about Tank Abbott. He sucks. More losses than wins. Also, according to wiki “All of Tanks fights have ended in the first round,” which seems a little misleading, since “he fought Oleg Taktarov for over 17 minutes before succumbing to a rear naked choke.” I guess some fights have no rounds, so any win or loss happens in the first?
And who is the best UFC Gracie? I se MH kicked Royce Gracie’s ass this year.

But really, shit has changed a lot. Cross training is the norm now. BJJ is great stuff, but against super-athletic guys with cross training it’s just not enough. They’ve had years now to figure out how to beat a pure BJJ guy.
Royce still showed he had some greatness to him. He was in a horrid armbar or something (can’t rmember exactly) for the longest time and just got incredibly bent in it. He really should have broke under that, but didn’t.
And Tank is just a fun guy. He’s not a brilliant fighter or anything. He was just a great personality. And when he won, it was often spectacular. You watched that Oleg fight at my house, it’s the one where Tank looked like he was sleeping (literally) and we kept fast forwarding through. It had no rounds.
Tanks’ comentary is what made me love him though. It’s a welcome break from all the “Well Randy, you know what it’s like to get poked in the eye” stuff we get these days.
I’ve only just now seen the GSP vs. BJ Penn match. BJ is pretty whiny I was sad to see.
I don’t really know much of the sports world, so I don’t really know what competition GSP would have for best Canadian athlete. He’s so damn impressive though, and fighting is the most athletic thing I’ve ever done, so he gets my vote. And since I don’t believe in voting, but in dictates from me, that means he actually IS Canada’s athlete of the year.
Awesome. I’ll make up an award post after the New Years party tonight.

I haven’t seen the fight yet. I’m semi devastated. I almost bet on Serra on a whim…. but I didn’t! Luckily i bet on Koscheck. Crazy shit.
(Aside form the time i bet all underdogs in order to maximize my winnings, I’m batting 100% on picking underdog winners! A record I’m probably going to blow when I bet it all on Randy over Cro cop.)
